The “Anindilyakwan People” the Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago invite you to explore the pristine environment and share their ancient culture.

A special feature for visitors to Groote Eylandt is the option to design an itinerary incorporating a focus that may have a particular interest and spend extended time with Traditional owners. Please contact us to plan your unique experience.

ANINDILYAKWA CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

This half day introduction to Anindilyakwa Culture commences at the Art & Cultural Centre situated in the Lodge Grounds. Participants are introduced to the rich cultural heritage of the Anindilyakwan people and includes a visit to the Bush Medicine Workshop and the Linguistic centre in Angurugu.

GROOTE EXPLORER

The “Explorer” can be taken as a morning or afternoon tour and is approximately four hours duration. Participants will visit caves and view ancient rock art.  From our special vantage point the island manganese mining activity is viewed and concludes with a visit to the Port at Milner Bay.

Highlights include:

  • Historic Mission Church in Angurugu
  • Cave paintings
  • Viewing of manganese mining grounds
  • Emerald River
  • Milner Bay Port

BARTALUMBA BAY DISCOVERY (commencing early 2017)

This walking tour commences in the lodge grounds – the 7km easy walking trek winds through the reserve and to the sheltered waters of Bartalumba Bay.  Along the route there are numerous interpretive opportunities to gain an appreciation of the flora and fauna and their special indigenous uses.  The trek also provides an ideal opportunity to observe some of the GROOTE EYLANDT Bird Life.

The “Discovery” can be enjoyed as a self-guided experience or in the company of a local guide.  There is the option of making the return trek or being met at Bartalumba Bay for a drive back to the Lodge.
